Its intriguing name dates back to the 16th century, marking the memory of a boat, possibly a galleon, that Garcia Gonçalves Madruga, the Captain General at the time, had commissioned at his own expense in order to settle a debt he owed to King John III of Portugal (Dom João III). This bathing area is divided into two sections: an enclosed natural pool and an open-sea one, access to which is facilitated through its harbour.
