The coastal settlement of Pontinha is situated along the coastline of the São Mateus parish, in the municipality of Madalena. It is part of the Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. This cluster had access from Gingeira and was intersected by the Estrada Regional (Regional Road) in the first half of the 20th century. It also had access via the coastal path from Areeiro. It is a fairly small cluster, exclusively composed of small single-storey wine cellars. The chapel of São Jerónimo, which has since been destroyed, was located in the vicinity of this settlement, near the coast. With the construction of the Estrada Regional and subsequent development, from the late 20th century onward, several houses started to appear along the road, gradually transforming it into a residential area, replacing the original main settlements of Relvas, Caldeirões, and Gingeira.
