Guindaste & Canada das Adegas

The coastal settlement of Guindaste is situated along the coastline of the Candelária parish, in the municipality of Madalena. It is part of the Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004. This settlement can be accessed from the areas of Mirateca and Campo Raso. Originally, it was dominated by two manor houses – the Solar do Visconde Leite Perry and the Solar dos Arriagas – both housing production facilities including stills and warehouses. Additionally, there was a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Good Death – unfortunately destroyed by the cyclone of 1893. These were located near a port equipped with rola-pipas (a ramp for rolling wine barrels), surrounded by extensive vineyards and fig trees. Within this settlement, two tidal wells ensured a stable water supply for the community, as well as for the operation of the stills.

The coastal settlement of Canada das Adegas is located along the coastline of the Candelária parish, in the Madalena municipality. It is also part of the Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004. This cluster extends from the Guindaste settlement and is accessible from the areas of Mirateca and Campo Raso. Its composition is characterized exclusively by small single-storey wine cellars built with stone, closely nestled together, and positioned along the pathway leading to the coast and the Guindaste settlement.
