Gruta das Torres

The Gruta das Torres, situated on Pico Island, stands as Portugal’s largest known lava tube, measuring 5150 metres in total length. It was formed from lava flows during volcanic eruptions originating from Cabeço Bravo in the volcanic complex of Pico Mountain. The cave comprises a primary tunnel stretching for 4480 meters and predominantly offers grand dimensions, with heights reaching up to 15 metres. Additionally, there are numerous smaller secondary lateral and upper tunnels present more modest dimensions. Inside, you’ll find a wealth of volcanic speleological formations such as lava stalactites, lava stalagmites, lateral benches, and lava balls. The lava on the cave floor includes both aa and pahoehoe types and is well-preserved, with areas covered by rock debris resulting from collapses of the cave walls and ceiling. The cave harbors molds, bacteria, and cave-dwelling fauna characteristic of such environments. This volcanic cavity can be visited through the Gruta das Torres Visitors Centre. This locale holds utmost priority as a geosite, boasting regional prominence and proving pertinent for scientific, economic, educational, and geotourism purposes.
