Fajã Lávica das Lajes do Pico

The Fajã Lávica das Lajes do Pico, upon which the town of the same name is situated, was formed by basaltic lava flows emitted from a small spatter cone located in the vicinity of Cabeço do Geraldo. Both the cone and the plain are situated on the southwestern flanks of the shield volcano Topo. The lava flows spilled over the former coastal cliffs, resulting in the formation of this lavic delta. This geological phenomenon not only expanded the island’s area but also preserved the ancient shoreline as a fossilized cliff, known as an “arriba fóssil.”

From the viewpoint located along the regional road, visitors can enjoy a splendid perspective of this geosite. The southern part of the geosite is marked by the presence of Castelete, the eroded remnants of an ancient scoria cone, now heavily worn down by the sea’s erosive forces. To the north, near the Santa Catarina Fort, lies another, smaller and older fajãs. On both sides of the main fajã, there are coastal lagoons that offer pleasant bathing areas. This geosite is a highlight of the Azores Geopark, with regional significance, and serves as an excellent educational and geotourism destination, attracting visitors interested in its scientific and cultural aspects. The presence of the town’s port and various structures associated with whaling add to the charm and importance of this site.
