Main Church of São Roque

The Main Church of São Roque dates back to the 18th century and was rebuilt in 1776 on the site of the former Chapel of Bom Jesus, originally built in 1480 by the founders of the São Roque settlement.

The current church features a cruciform layout, consisting of three aisles separated by five arches. The façade is characterized by its two bell towers, each crowned with pyramid-shaped roofs.

Inside, the baptismal chapel stands out with its stone font, the ornate and gilded wooden pulpit, the gilded and polychrome carved altars, the main gilded altarpiece, and the image of its patron saint – São Roque. The wooden ceiling is adorned with painted with vegetal motifs. The church underwent restoration work following the earthquake of 1998.

During the 19th century, the ruins of the Church of Misericórdia still existed near the cemetery, in the rural area of São Roque.
